International Symposium on Marine Genomics 2009

Dear Sir/Madam

It is our great honor to invite you to the upcoming international symposium on marine genomics (ISMG2009), to be held in Okinawa, Japan, from 15th to 18th December 2009. A variety of thematic sessions are on the program that will ensure that this is a very informative and enjoyable meeting.

After years of sustained effort, we have the sequences of many organisms in addition to the human genome. This genomic information impacts basic research, medicine and industry and society at large. Expertise in evolutionary biology will be increasingly important for reducing this new information to practical application. Rapid development in comparative evolutionary biology has already given us tools to investigate the origin of new illnesses and to efficiently develop effective treatments.

The benefits of genomic science to medicine, food production and processing and other industrial processes are made more efficient by comparative evolutionary biology applied to microbial genomes. Marine organisms are abundant in variety and usefulness as a dietary resource and thus are the focus of much public interest in the study of biodiversity. Japan has a long history of use of marine resources and the study of marine biology. As an island nation, we are aware of the wealth of diversity in our oceans and the practical use and management of this wealth.

The study of marine genomics will continue to grow in significance for both the academic and industrial realms. The importance of the oceans is clear for practical concerns relating to environmental conservation.

This symposium's primary objective is to promote research and development on marine genomics. The symposium is the third in series and also focusing to have an animated discussion featuring nationally- and internationally-renown researchers. To learn more about the Symposium and to register please visits us online at http://www.okinawa-congre.co.jp/ismg2009/. Your attendance will make a valuable contribution to the success of the International Symposium on Marine Genomics.

We look forward to welcoming you to this event and to the beautiful island of Okinawa, Japan.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Takashi Gojobori
The Chairman,
International Symposium on Marine Genomics
