General information

Location and Population

Among 47 prefectures in Japan, Okinawa is located in the southernmost
part between mainland Japan and Taiwan. Habited by approximately 1.3
million people, it consists of the main island of Okinawa and more
than 160 islands (48 are inhabited) with a total land area of about
2,265 square kilometers.

Climate

The entire prefecture of Okinawa belongs in a subtropical ocean climate
with average annual temperature 22.7 ℃. The average low temperature
during winter is 20.5℃ and it hardly snows or frosts.

History

Historically, Okinawa was the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429-1879) and actively
engaged in trade with China, Korea and many Southeast Asian countries
Cultural characteristics and conventions born through relations with
other countries in those days still survive in suchinteresting forms
as artifacts and festivals, giving additional charm to Okinawa.
